MARKETING IS BROKEN BY DESIGN

Marketing isn’t failing because you’re doing it wrong. It’s broken by design — built on a volume playbook that rewards making more, not making sense. So we publish more, automate more, measure more — and move the needle less.

Scaling volume, it turns out, isn’t the same as scaling value. The fix isn’t another tactic. It’s a different way of seeing — and a system for acting on what you see.

THE IDEA AT THE CENTER

One cycle, running continuously.

The Adaptive CMO organizes everything around a single engine — the Signal Cycle. Sense what the market is telling you, make sense of it, move on it, and learn, so you get sharper every turn.

THE ENGINE

The Signal Cycle

Sense → Interpret → Move → Learn, turning continuously. Each pass leaves you a little sharper than the last.

SENSE & INTERPRET

Patterns & Personas

Sense the signals others miss; interpret them into living, breathing buyers that update as the market does.

MOVE

Positioning & Programs

Act on what you learn — in what you say (positioning) and what you do (campaigns that learn while they run).

LEARN + FOUNDATION

Performance, Stack & Culture

Metrics that make you smarter, on a foundation of the right technology and the habits that let the cycle run.

Signature Framework

Adaptive Pattern Framework

A practical operating model for leaders who need marketing to become more responsive, more measurable, and more strategically useful.

Notice

Patterns

Read the market’s real signals behind the numbers, instead of chasing the vanity metrics that keep teams busy and blind.

Interpret

Personas

Replace static persona decks that get filed away with representations of your buyers that evolve as they do.

Move · say

Positioning

Stay relevant in motion without constantly reinventing the brand.

Move · do

Programs

Run campaigns with learning built into their DNA, not bolted on after.

Learn

Performance

Trade vanity metrics for performance that provokes the next question and informs the next move.

Foundation

Stack

Technology built for velocity through insight.

Foundation

Culture

The habits that let an adaptive marketing org actually function.

Run the signal cycle

Turn scattered activity into one motion — notice, interpret, move, learn — so your marketing compounds instead of churns.

What you’ll learn

What you’ll be able to do.

Not more tactics — a way of seeing, and a system for acting on it. By the end you’ll run marketing as a cycle that gets smarter every turn.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Meet Zane Rathwick.

I’ve spent more than twenty years running marketing for B2B SaaS companies, which means I’ve watched a lot of smart people do expensive things for defensible reasons — and, in fairness, signed off on a few of those things myself. Startups scrounging for their first traction, companies in the blender of an acquisition, teams white-knuckling a public launch. Different logos, same job every time: figure out what the market is actually telling you before the competition does, and move before the window shuts.

Here’s what I couldn’t unsee. Smart teams — funded, credentialed, genuinely talented — kept optimizing the wrong loop, faster. Pouring heroic effort into an annual plan the market had quietly divorced back in March. More content, more campaigns, more dashboards measuring the wrong thing to two decimal places. Everyone exhausted. Nobody moving. We called it execution. It was mostly motion.

These books come from the trenches, not a whiteboard — and not from a conference stage where the case studies always work out. The examples in them are mine; I was in the room, usually the one who had to explain the number. The argument runs through all of it, and I’ll repeat it until you want to throw the book across the room: marketing should get smarter as it moves, not three months later in a retrospective, where insight becomes a slide nobody opens.

READY?

Stop making more.
Start making sense.

Become the kind of marketing leader who senses, moves, and learns faster than the market changes.
